Usbekistan (usbek. Oʻzbekiston; amtlich Republik Usbekistan, usbek. Oʻzbekiston Respublikasi) ist ein islamisch geprägter Binnenstaat in Zentralasien. Nachbarländer sind im Westen und Norden Kasachstan, im Osten Kirgisistan, im Südosten Tadschikistan und Afghanistan, im Süden Turkmenistan. Im Westen grenzt der Staat zudem an den Westlichen Aralsee und den Sarykamyschsee. Er entstand im Oktober 1924 als Usbekische Sozialistische Sowjetrepublik, einem Teil der Sowjetunion, und wurde 1991 unabhängig. Der Name Usbekistan leitet sich vom Volk der Usbeken ab, deren Bezeichnung wiederum auf Usbek Khan zurückgeht.
