Der Staat Vatikanstadt (amtliche Langform in Deutschland und der Schweiz) oder Staat der Vatikanstadt (amtliche Langform in Österreich), kurz auch Vatikan, Vatikanstadt oder Vatikanstaat genannt, ist der kleinste allgemein anerkannte Staat der Welt. Er ist eine Enklave in Italien innerhalb des Stadtgebiets von Rom, hat eine Fläche von 0,44 Quadratkilometern und etwa 836 Einwohner (siehe unten Abschnitt Bevölkerung).

Zum Territorium der Vatikanstadt gehören unter anderem der Petersdom, der Petersplatz, die Sixtinische Kapelle sowie die Paläste und Gärten innerhalb der vatikanischen Mauern.

Der Staat Vatikanstadt ist eine absolute Wahlmonarchie, deren Oberhaupt der Papst ist. Dieser wird von den Kardinälen gewählt und scheidet nur durch Tod oder Rücktritt aus diesem Amt aus. Der Heilige Stuhl als nichtstaatliches, eigenständiges, vom Staat Vatikanstadt zu unterscheidendes Völkerrechtssubjekt vertritt den Zwergstaat auf internationaler Ebene.
