Äquatorialguinea ist ein Staat in Subsahara-Afrika. Der Festlandteil des Staates grenzt im Norden an Kamerun, im Süden und Osten an Gabun und im Westen an den Golf von Guinea. Der südlichste Teil des Staatsgebietes, die Insel Annobón oder Pagalu, liegt 156 Kilometer südlich des Äquators.

Die staatstragende Bevölkerungsgruppe der ehemaligen spanischen Kolonie bildet das Volk der Fang, eine marginalisierte Minderheit sind die Bubi. Das Land ist besonders entlang der Küstengebiete reich an Erdölvorkommen, deren Einnahmen allerdings nur einer kleinen – politisch einflussreichen – Elite zugutekommen. Das hohe Pro-Kopf-Einkommen nähert sich dem europäischen Durchschnitt. Trotzdem ist die Armutsquote hoch. Schwere Verletzungen der Menschenrechte gibt es nicht mehr; aber das Land bietet keine Rechtssicherheit.
